Here are some simple steps to ensure you burn your candles safely & responsibly.
1. The most basic rule is NEVER leave a burning candle unattended
2. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions
3. Remove all flammable materials such as ornaments, ribbons, tags, before lighting a candle
4. Trim wicks to ¼” prior to each use and keep trimmed
5. Place free standing candles on a shallow dish or bowl to catch melted wax
6. Use heat resistant candle holders and containers for burning your candles
7. Burn candle on a heat resistant surface so as not to damage your furniture
8. Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets
9. Keep candles away from drafts and vents
10. Position candles away from flammable objects
11. Extinguish a candle that smokes
12. Extinguish candle when ½" of wax remains in a container
13. Do not move a glass container when the wax is liquid.
14. Extinguish the flame if it burns too close to the container or holder
TIPS!!! 1) When burning your candle for the first time, burn it for an hour for every inch of its diameter. This will allow the wax pool to extend to the outer rim of the candle and will prevent your candle from forming a well in the center. This also sets the candle’s “memory”. The candle will remember to burn out to the outer rim each time you relight it.
2) Never “blow out” a candle. Blowing will spray the wax all over and cause the candle to drip and smoke. Use a candle snuffer. If you don’t have one, here is a clever step - place your forefinger in front of the flame and then blow the candle out. This way the air hits the candle from the sides instead of directly.
